John Putnam
Managing Principal
John Putnam is a Managing Principal in the Executive Workforce Practice at SullivanCotter. He is a leader with over 15 years of health care consulting experience and serves as a trusted advisor to many of the nation’s top hospitals and health systems. John also serves as the firm’s Practice Committee co-chair and leads the firm in identifying health care industry trends and talent insights that influence our clients’ strategies and decisions.
John works closely with not-for-profit health care organizations to help align executive pay, performance and talent strategy with overall business goals – helping clients to remain competitive and agile in an increasingly complex marketplace.
His experience includes:
- Assisting with the development of executive compensation philosophy and strategy that delivers on organizational mission, vision and values.
- Designing executive compensation programs, including both short- and long-term incentive plans, to help drive performance in the transition to value-based care.
- Leading competitive market pricing assessments and job evaluations to aid in the development of effective recruitment, retention and engagement practices.
- Advising boards and compensation committees on best practices in governance helping ensure regulatory compliance and appropriate oversight of executive compensation and benefits programs.
- Preparing formal opinion letters regarding the reasonableness of compensation provided to disqualified persons of not-for-profit 501(c)(3) and (c)(4) organizations.
- Working with boards and compensation committees to ensure compliance with IRS intermediate sanctions legislation.
Prior to joining SullivanCotter, John was a senior principal and executive compensation consultant at a global human resources firm.
He received his Bachelor of Arts in economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
