John Putnam

Managing Principal

John Putnam is a Managing Principal in the Executive Workforce Services Practice at SullivanCotter. He is a leader with over 15 years of health care consulting experience and serves as a trusted advisor to many of the nation’s top hospitals and health systems. John also serves as the firm’s Practice Committee chair and leads the firm in identifying health care industry trends and talent insights that influence our clients’ strategies and decisions.

John works closely with not-for-profit health care organizations to help align executive pay, performance, and talent strategy with overall business goals, helping clients to remain competitive and agile in an increasingly complex marketplace.

His experience includes:

  • Assisting with the development of executive compensation philosophy and strategy that delivers on organizational mission, vision, and values.
  • Designing executive compensation programs, including both short- and long-term incentive plans, to help drive performance in the transition to value-based care.
  • Leading competitive market pricing assessments and job evaluations to aid in the development of effective recruitment, retention, and engagement practices.
  • Advising boards and compensation committees on best practices in governance, helping ensure regulatory compliance and appropriate oversight of executive compensation and benefits programs.
  • Preparing formal opinion letters regarding the reasonableness of compensation provided to disqualified persons of not-for-profit 501(c)(3) and (c)(4) organizations.
  • Working with boards and compensation committees to support their role as catalysts for organizational performance.

Prior to joining SullivanCotter, John was a senior principal and executive compensation consultant at a global human resources firm.

He received his Bachelor of Arts in economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
