Dave Hesselink is a Managing Principal in the Physician Workforce (PW) practice at SullivanCotter. Dave serves as a member of the PW Leadership Team which directs the activities of the practice. Dave also leads the PW Community Health System Market Segment Team which focuses on responding to market challenges within the community health system market segment. Dave recently stepped down as a Co-Leader of the firm’s Fair Market Value and Valuation practice after six years. Dave’s role has since expanded to leading the PW Growth Council beginning in 2023.
Dave joined SullivanCotter in 2013 with over 20 years of health care leadership experience in medical group chief financial officer and chief executive officer roles with large health systems like Centura Health and Alegent Creighton Clinic. During his career, he has also worked for other major health care organizations including the Cleveland Clinic, as well as other professional services firms. Since joining SullivanCotter, Dave has focused on physician and advanced practice provider (APP) compensation, assisting his clients with physician and APP alignment through compensation design, and physician compensation fair market value assessment.
Drawing upon his extensive experience Dave assists clients with:
- Designing and implementing physician and APP compensation and benefits plans that align rewards with productivity and quality benchmarks and increase provider satisfaction.
- Reorganizing health system board and committee structures to provide effective physician compensation governance.
- Assessing fair market value and reasonableness of physician compensation arrangements to help organizations manage regulatory risk and financial sustainability.
- Supporting professional service agreement (PSA) negotiations between health systems and large physician groups to better align interests and improve accountability.
- Administering physician compensation plans, including payroll and benefits plan administration, creating policy and procedure support, physician reporting, fair market value compliance and measurement of clinical quality performance.
Dave is a frequent speaker on topics such as physician and APP compensation, physician compensation governance and fair market value and commercial reasonableness. Since 2018 Dave has led the PW practice’s annual training workshop and the practice’s annual Physician Compensation Survey webinar. Dave is a member of the PW Fair Market Value Committee, which is responsible for managing firm risk related to challenging fair market value and commercial reasonableness assessments.
Dave holds both an MBA and MHA from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
