SullivanCotter is seeking an experienced data governance director for a newly formed data governance program that will enable value to our clients and associates. This leadership role is key to support the future growth of our firm and a key part of our firm’s strategic plan. Data is the differentiator of our firm and a key component of our future growth. This role will partner with stakeholders and sponsors represented in the Data Governance Committee (DGC) to define, build and lead an effective data governance program that supports short-term business goals, drives data value to our clients, establishes a foundation for long-term business growth and enables data access to our associates. The Data Governance Charter provides a broad umbrella of expectations.

Through the data governance structure, the data governance director will lead a collaborative DGC to determine and govern usability, security, standards and policies that control our commercial data and will create new data value for our firm. This role will be responsible for guiding the DGC in building and maintaining a data governance model and leading a data governance body that consists of matrixed business and technology stakeholders. The data governance model will support SullivanCotter business goals and is founded on our firm values.

The role will, with the members of the DGC, drive common processes and create common standards that will inform technology delivery, enable the delivery of high-value consulting services and maximize data value for our clients and associates. The data governance director will drive and with the DGC, develop best practices on data standards, policies & procedures on data definitions, data collection & analysis, quality and access to data. The role will be a partner with Data Domain Owners (DDOs) to coordinate policies and ensure consistency and implementation of applicable protocols.

This role will advise the Leadership Council on data governance implications of data strategies and define data requirements to facilitate Product Management’s ability to translate to the technology data services team for implementation and drive new value at the firm level. The data governance director will monitor and report to the DGC, DDOs and the Leadership Council on potential areas of cross-functional friction/breakage on changes in technology, BI tools and access

The expected initial responsibilities and outcomes for the data governance director and the members of the DGC are listed below. It is expected that with successful implementations, additional priorities will be identified.

  • Data Authorization, Access, and Privacy
  • Build and define data governance processes
  • Define consistent processes for CBU and ITBU to collaborate on survey development, data collection and reporting
  • Data catalog completion. Initial data inventory, data descriptions, data ownership, data location, user accessibility, process to keep current
  • Other duties as assigned


We find people who generally fit this profile have a high degree of success in this role have:

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or other related fields
  • 8+ years of experience creating and managing a firm-wide data governance program, framework, and strategy
  • 5+ years in a senior management role with responsibilities in a healthcare data-related field
  • Deep knowledge of data security principles, data use requirements and data, ownership models
  • Ability to lead an organization through new data governance processes via both direct managerial oversight and stakeholder influence
  • Technology or business background where the candidate was a data subject matter expert
  • Data design or architecture experience desired
  • Consulting experience desired
